The Case Against Cell Phones

Category: Society, TechnologyJoz @ 12:48 am

I hate cell phones.  Some of my friends cannot fathom this.  No, I’m not an old man, and I’m not against the actual technology.  The technology is pretty cool.  I hate them because of their social impact.  Cell phones are social detriments.

Firstly: safety.  I’d like to see the studies, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the number of lives lost from cell phone usage is equal if not more than the number of lives saved from having cell phones.  Of course I’m talking about people driving while talking on their cell phones.  I bet that out of fatal accidents, the number originating from being distracted while holding a cell phone up to one’s face is significant.  I’ve seen so much extremely stupid driving behavior out there, and lo and behold, the person is on their phone.  Some people it’s like they are not at all paying any attention to driving.

Secondly: the actual social deterioration that cell phones cause.  There’s nothing like having a conversation with somebody, and then their cell phone interrupts.  Ok, maybe that’s not a big deal, but when they stop talking to you and answer the call, that is just rude.  This is now becoming a more and more accepted practice, which is terrible!  On a number of occasions I’ve seen potential relationships thwarted by this.  I’ve seen girls/guys interested in each other, and when one is trying to chat up the other, they take a cell phone call.  And I’m not talking about them not being interested in the other person and trying to get out of the conversation.  I’ve had this happen to myself a while back.  I was *somewhat* into this girl, and I know she was into me, and I was thinking of going ahead and asking her out after class, just to see how things could go with us.  So class ends, and we’re walking out and talking.  Her cell phone rings, and she interrupts our conversation to yap away on this thing.  I was so turned off by it that I was no longer interested.
